    TSA and Real ID

Beginning today, February 1, 2026, TSA will require that any state issued ID used for travel be Real ID compliant. The government moved quickly to implement the Real ID act. Passed in 2005, it only took 20 years to enforce the law passed as a result of the 9/11 commission report. But don’t worry, if you don’t have a Real ID compliant state ID, you can use a passport, permanent resident card, or even a Canadian provincial driver license. Don’t have one of those? You can go online and pay $45. When you arrive at the airport, simply show the TSA your receipt and they will perform a real-time background check based on…nope, they didn’t explain that part. I feel safer already.

    Tom Homan In Minneapolis

Thursday January 29’ border tzar Tom Homan spoke on his first three days on the ground in Minneapolis. He said ‘jurisdictions that refuse to cooperate with federal immigration authorities are sanctuaries for criminals. Sanctuary cities are sanctuaries for criminals and endangers the residents of the community’. He noted that the Minnesota state prison system under the department of corrections has been honoring detainers and expressed appreciation. He expressed how much easier and safer it is to bring a person into ICE custody from a jail or prison than to get them from the street. He spoke about funding and organized protests and promised to prosecute crimes related to attacks on law enforcement. He was questioned about prioritizing violent criminals over people who’s only crime is being in the country illegally. In response, he said that while targeted operations are focused on aliens who have committed additional crimes, anyone who is in the country without authorization is on the table.

    Alex Pretti

Staying in Minneapolis, a new video of ICE protester Alex Pretti has been released. A week before he was fatally shot by border patrol agents, video shows Pretti cursing and spitting at agents before kicking out the tail light of one of their vehicles. The agents then exit the vehicle and engage in a brief, physical altercation with Pretti before letting him go.

    Don Lemon

Friday, January 30, Don Lemon was arrested for his participation in the disruption of a St Paul Minnesota church service. Lemon entered the church with a group of anti ICE protesters. Despite being asked to leave by the pastor, the group shouted, standing in the aisles and not allowing the service to continue. Many online were critical of the arrest, citing first amendment rights. NTSB Hearing On DC Plane Crash

Tuesday, January 27, the NTSB held a board meeting to discuss the midair collision between PSA airlines and a military helicopter in DC last year. Their report blames systemic failures, citing airspace design and risk management by both the FAA and the Army. They noted that neither aircraft was equipped with collision avoidance technology capable of effective alerts at such a low altitude. Had the airplane been equipped with a better system, the crew would have had 59 seconds to avoid contact with the helicopter. The NTSB issued 33 safety recommendations to the FAA and 8 to the Army.

Florida Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit

Wednesday, January 28, Florida Governor Ron Desantis announced that Florida will participate in the Federal Education Freedom Tax Credit Program. Created as part of Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill, this law is a brain teaser. If your state opts in like Florida did, you can personally donate to any Scholarship Granting Organization, or SGO. Your donation, up to $1700 is then returned to you in the form of a tax credit. This is different than a deduction and if you’d like a video about how federal income tax works, let me know in the comments. You can’t earmark the money, pay private school tuition or direct the money to a specific school. Anyone may donate this money, essentially transforming tax liability into a donation to scholarship programs. The scholarships themselves are available only to students from households earning 300% or less of the median income in the county. For what it’s worth, as convoluted as this is, the federal government is going to give you back up to $1700 in donations to scholarship programs, so if you can float that money until you file your tax return, you are essentially redirecting that money away from the federal government and into a scholarship program in your state.

Mamdani and Adams Feud Over Budgets

Wednesday, January 28, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a press conference on the city budget. He alleged that the city has a $12B deficit, that former mayor Eric Adams did it intentionally, and that the people of New York City were deceived about it. He also blamed Andrew Cuomo for a $21B difference between what city residents pay in taxes to the state and what the city receives back in funding. Eric Adams pushed back, saying that budgets passed by his administration went through the city council. He also said that when he was mayor, the city’s credit rating was the highest in history. He maintained that he left $8B in cash reserves. He blames Mamdani’s campaign promises of more free services in New York City.

    Fed Meeting Announcement

In Finance, Wednesday, January 28, Fed Chair Jerome Powell spoke following the board’s 2 day meeting. He said that the economy expanded at a solid pace last year and comes into 2026 on a solid footing. Job gains remain low, but the unemployment rate has shown signs of stabilization and inflation remains somewhat elevated. The board chose not to move interest rates this cycle after two previous reductions. He said that consumer spending has been resilient and business fixed investment has expanded while the housing sector remains weak. Donald Trump took to truth social to push back saying that with the influx of tariff money and the lowered inflation risk, the Fed should be cutting rates more aggressively. Flagg scored 49 points to break the record for the highest single game points total by a teenager in NBA history. But it was Knapple’s 34 points and tough defense late that helped him lead the Charlotte Hornets to a 121-123 win over Flagg and the Mavericks.

And finally, at the Australian Open finals this weekend, Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka to win her second grand slam title. Born in Russia but representing Kazakhstan, Rybakina has twice lost in the finals to Sabalenka in recent years. Minneapolis Protester Shot By Border Patrol

We begin again in Minneapolis where another ICE protester was fatally shot Saturday, January 25. According to Minneapolis ICE head Greg Bovino, agents were conducting a targeted operation to apprehend Jose Huerta Chuma. who’s criminal history includes domestic assault, intentional bodily harm and disorderly conduct. The rest of this story is hard to tell because no matter what I say or how I say it, someone is going to be upset. Mayor Jacob Frey called the video of the incident “more than 6 masked agents, pummeling one of our constituents, and shooting him to death” while referring to ICE operations as “Occupation” and “Invasion”. Bovino says that an individual approached border patrol agents with a 9mm semi-automatic hand gun and that when they attempted to disarm him he violently resisted. A border patrol agent shot the subject who had two loaded magazines and no identification. There are videos from several angles.

In Washington, D.C., where on Wednesday, January 21, the House Oversight Committee voted to refer Bill and Hillary Clinton to the House floor on the criminal charge of contempt of Congress. This comes after the Clintons did not appear before a scheduled congressional hearing last week. The Oversight Committee is seeking to interview the Clintons regarding the investigation into Jeffrey Epstein’s business. Committee Chair James Comer wants to ask the Clintons about Epstein’s alleged connections to the Clinton Foundation. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez spoke to CVS CEO David Joyner, pointing out that CVS owns Aetna, Oak Street Health clinics, and CVS Caremark, a company that negotiates the prices of pharmaceuticals. She stated that this monopoly is not good for patients. She went on to note that the ACA forces insurance companies to spend large amounts on care. Automatic Vehicle Disabling Systems Still Law

In November of 2021, Congress passed HR3684, a 1039-page funding bill for highway safety, transit and “other purposes.” Buried about 400 pages in, is a requirement that all new vehicles manufactured for sale in the United States come equipped with systems that can passively monitor drivers and automatically limit or prevent operation of the vehicle if the system believes the driver to be impaired. As part of this week’s congressional funding packages, Representative Thomas Massie proposed an amendment that would prohibit funding to enforce the rules in HR3684. His amendment did not pass when 57 republicans joined with Democrats to oppose it. This means that new cars will be required to adhere to this rule beginning in 2027.

It requires insurance companies to meet what is being called the “plain English insurance” standard. Further, it requires any health care provider who accepts Medicare or Medicaid to publish pricing and fees in their place of business. If you read the official release from the post office, they will tell you that postmarks have not changed since the move away from hand stamping mail. While that is technically true, the Postmaster General began closing and consolidating regional processing centers in 2012. The Postal Regulatory Commission says that if your mail is dropped more than 50 miles from the closest regional processing center, it will be stamped with the FOLLOWING business day’s date. This is because it’s stamped at the processing center, not at the post office. Transgender Athletes

Tuesday, January 13, The Supreme Court heard oral arguments in Little v. Hecox. Idaho State officials are seeking reversal of a lower court’s ruling that blocked the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act. The 2020 law designates athletic teams and sports based on biological sex and prohibits biological males from participating in women’s athletics. Idaho argued that the physical difference between biological males and females necessitates protections for biological females. Opponents argue that the law does not require evidence of harm and exclusion is automatic. The court tested the limits of categorical rules, asking whether courts should override legislatures in an area like sports where sex distinction has always existed. They also asked whether the constitution requires evidence before exclusion.

What you are about to hear is satire. The purpose is to shine light on partisanship that never wastes a crisis. I mock politicians and officials not to make you laugh. Rather, to give you the opportunity to hear their words from another voice. Press conferences and video of the incident are posted on The Cold Take dot Com

As you have likely heard, on Wednesday, an Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent fatally shot a woman in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Within a few hours, officials for both Republicans and Democrats spoke about the event. These are their exact words.

Walz : We’ve been warning for weeks that the Trump administration’s dangerous, sensationalized operations are a threat to our public safety, that someone was going to get hurt. Just yesterday, I said exactly that. What we’re seeing is the consequences of governance designed to generate fear, headlines, and conflict. It’s governing by reality TV. And today that recklessness cost someone their life.

Noem : “It was an act of domestic terrorism. What happened is our ice officers were out in enforcement action. They got stuck in the snow because of the adverse weather that is in Minneapolis. They were attempting to push out their vehicle and a woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively shot to protect himself and the people around him and my understanding is that she was hit and is deceased.”

Frey: “But what we do know is that a 37 year-old woman is dead and that she was shot by ICE. We’ve dreaded this moment since the early stages of this ICE presence in Minneapolis. Not only is this a concern that we’ve had internally, we’ve been talking about it. They are not here to cause safety in this city. What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust. They’re ripping families apart. They’re sewing chaos on our streets and in this case quite literally killing people. So they are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bullshit. This was an agent recklessly using power that resulted in somebody dying, getting killed.”

Noem : “…when a mob of agitators that were harassing them all day began blocking them in, shouting at them, and impeding law enforcement operations, ICE officers and agents approached the vehicle of the individual in question, who was blocking the officers in with her vehicle, and she had been stalking and impeding their work all throughout the day. ICE agents repeatedly ordered her to get out of the car and to stop obstructing law enforcement, but she refused to obey their commands. She then proceeded to weaponize her vehicle and she attempted to run a law enforcement officer over it. This appears as an attempt to kill or to cause bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism. The ICE officer fearing for his life and the other officers around him and the safety of the public fired defensive shots.”

Frey: “There’s little I can say again that’ll make this situation better. But I do have a message for our community, for our city, and I have a message for ICE. To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety. And you are doing exactly the opposite. People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Long-term Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized. And now somebody is dead. That’s on you. And it’s also on you to leave. It’s on you to make sure that further damage, further loss of life and injury is not done.”

Noem : “This city has burned before and your mayor and your governor let it happen. President Trump is not going to let that happen. He and our federal law enforcement officers are here to bring peace and to bring public safety and to ensure that criminal activity is stopped and that people who perpetuate it will face consequences. Since we have been here in recent weeks, we have arrested over 1,500 criminals off of the streets.

Frey: “So, obviously, and I I have to always lead with this caveat because it is true, an investigation still does need to be conducted. I had my perception of what took place based on the vehicle and the vehicle’s positioning. does not appear that the individual is trying to ram anybody.”

Walz : And from here on, I have a very simple
message. We do not need any further help from the federal government. To Donald Trump and Christy Gnome, you’ve done enough. There’s nothing more important than Minnesotans safety. I’ve issued a warning order to prepare the Minnesota National
Guard. We have soldiers in training and
prepared to be deployed if necessary.

Vance : “I’m just going to read it. Outrage after ICE officer kills US citizen in Minneapolis. Well, that’s one way to put it. And that is the way that many people in the corporate media have put this attack over the last 24 hours. And I say attack very very intentionally because this was an attack on federal law enforcement. This was an attack on law and order. This was an attack on the American people. The way that the media by and large has reported this story has been an absolute disgrace and it puts our law enforcement officers at risk every single day. What that headline leaves out is the fact that that very ice officer nearly had his life ended, dragged by a car 6 months ago, 33 stitches in his leg. So, you think maybe he’s a little bit sensitive about somebody ramming him with an automobile? What that headline leaves out is that that woman was there to interfere with a legitimate law enforcement operation in the United States of America. What that headline leaves out is that that woman is part of a broader left-wing network to attack, to dox, to assault, and to make it impossible for our ICE officers to do their job. If the media wants to tell the truth, they ought to tell the truth that a group of left-wing radicals have been working tirelessly, sometimes using domestic terror techniques to try to make it impossible for the president of the United States to do what the American people elected him to do, which is enforce our immigration laws. The president stands with ICE. I stand with ICE.”

Walz : All of you saw video in your eyes. We have a chaotic situation caused by the largest deployment in American history of federal agents into a community with no communication to locals. We had a chaotic situation where an individual is
in their car shot and killed.

Walz : I don’t know, I hope maybe we’re at their McCarthy moment. Do you have no decency? Do you have no decency? We have someone dead in their car for no reason whatsoever. And and I don’t I don’t want to be right about this, but I said if they do this, they’re going to create a chaotic
situation where someone innocent is going to get killed. And they did it. And and now we hear more political rhetoric. Enough. Enough is enough.

Did ICE murder Renee Good? Was she a domestic terrorist? Are ICE operations reckless and dangerous? I can’t answer these questions. Our stated purpose is to tell you what happened and let you decide what to think about it. My personal desire is for politicians, officials and leaders to all take one step towards one another. That would at least bring the country two steps closer together. If you take anything away from this, take away a moment of caution and hesitation before judging what you read or see. I would like it if you shared this video, but I would like it even more if you shared the message.

I’ll leave you with the version of this story we wanted to report:

On Wednesday, January 7, at 10:25am central, an ICE agent fatally shot a protester in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Several social media videos show the event, which unfolded quickly. The woman was parked sideways in the road. ICE agents ordered her out of her car, but she reversed, then drove forward. Video shows that she struck an agent who was moving from the passenger side to the driver side of her vehicle. That agent fired 3 shots, striking the driver. While bystanders chided ICE and accused them of murder, Homeland Security Secretary Noem called the shooting defensive. The FBI is investigating and we will bring you updates when they are available.

Moving to sports, Pittsburg Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf will serve a two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan. In Detroit on December 21, Metcalf approached a fan, grabbed him and attempted to throw a punch. The suspension will cost him over $500,000 in salary and the Steelers can void an additional $45M in guaranteed money. Despite accusations online, the fan insists that he did not use any curse words or racial slurs and the stadium investigation supported his assertion.

    ACA Fraud

House speaker Mike Johnson spoke on Wednesday December 10th about fraud within the Affordable Care Act portal. The Government Accountability Office released a report detailing their effort to create and submit fictitious identities. They used healthcare.gov directly as well as brokers and successfully registered 4 people in 2024 and 19 in 2025. Their applications lacked income verification, proof of citizenship and even fake or missing social security numbers. In all cases, the identities were enrolled and the premium tax credits were paid to the insurance companies. Their report states that fraud protection within the system is weak. Republicans used this as part of their reason for voting against a Democrat effort to extend Covid era expansion of the premium tax credits.
