Today is the 37th day of the federal government shutdown.

On Tuesday, Americans went to the polls to vote on state and local races. Democrats won each of the nationally covered races.

Virginia

In Virginia, Democratic candidate Abigail Spanberger became the first woman governor of the state. Jay Jones will take over as attorney general after a close race with Republican incumbent Jason Miyares.

New Jersey

New Jersey’s new governor will be Democrat Mikie Sherrill who will vacate her seat in Congress.

New York City

New York City elected democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani as their next mayor. The Democratic Socialist ran on a platform of lowering costs in the city by freezing rent for some apartments, making busses free and launching government owned and run grocery stores.

California

California voters passed proposition 50 by a wide margin. The referendum allows the state legislature to bypass the non-partisan redistricting commission until 2031. The text of the law references 2025 Texas redistricting as justification, and calls on the United States Congress to require independent, nonpartisan redistricting commissions nationwide.
